National Science Day: Linking classroom observance to communicative approach to presence science content knowledge
~Lalit Kishore
Short note
In India, the National Science Day is celebrated on the 28th February every year since 1986 to mark the discovery of the Raman effect and its announcement by noted physicist Sir C. V. Raman on the 28th February in 1928 which got him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. The theme of the observance this year is "Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat."
The main purpose of the observance is to celebrates the achievements of scientists, science communicators, science popularizers and their contributions to society.
Furthermore,, the observance works as a reminder of the landmark discoveries in fundamental science; encourage young people to become interested in science careers; emphasise the inculcation of scientific temper; address gender issues in science and initiate interdisciplinary studies including the communicative skills in science.
Communicative science: Emergent area of integration of science content with language arts and skills
Literacy in science can only be developed when language arts and presentation of scientific knowledge are made to overlap with conscious efforts. In other words, the experiences of science knowledge construction are needed to be supported by proper skills in reading, speaking, listening and communicating of discourses in science as a discipline.
ABCs of communicating science content
A: Attributes of science (objectivity, processes of finding out, verifiability, dynamism) experienced and applied in studying and communicating a subject area to make it science
B: Behavior appropriate to being scientific in outlook, attitudes and temper - behaving like an ethical scientist
C: Competence In scientific literacy skills to understand, organize and communicate 'Science Content Knowledge' with reasonable skills to identify, read, view, speak and listen to the popular scientific knowledge.
A discourse by Dr Lalit Kishore was held at CCE, Jaipur, to highlight that every discipline or subject area can be converted in science by its transaction with purity of scientific processes, practices and principles (3P Science Mantra)
The outcome-summary of the discourse is as follows.
During the discourse, the equations on turning any discipline into science were illustrated as follows
Educational science = Education as a discipline X Scientific processes, practices, principles
Linguistics = Language as a discipline X Science of speech, sound or audiology
Spiritual science: Self-knowledge as a discipline X Scientific processes, practices, principles
Pedagogy = Classroom instruction or teaching-learning practices as a discipline X Scientific processes, practices, principles
(Note: X to be read as crossed with)
Institutions can become places of implementation of management science by becoming apt in practicing educational science - which is related to classroom processes and teaching-learning experiments and studies; theory-into-action intervention; designed learning; creating research lessons and doing lesson studies, which is traditionally called pedagogy - the science of classroom instruction and communication.
On the occasion of NSD-2024, a demonstration on drawing the visual code on test-tube was made the importance science visual codes and their use in making and reading diagrams was explained (see vide)
