On World Press Freedom Day (May 3), which is predominantly celebrated on social media and online platforms, there is an urgent requirement for the press to deliver verified, scientific, and fact-based news and analysis.
In today's intricate social media environment, journalism must operate without fear or favoritism. As stated by UNESCO, which has organized this event annually since 1993, the Global Conference offers a platform for journalists, representatives of civil society, national authorities, academics, and the general public to engage in discussions regarding the emerging challenges to press freedom and the safety of journalists, as well as to collaborate on identifying potential solutions.
At present, the following issues are of significant concern.
• The Safety of Women and Men Journalists and Media Workers
• Independent and Professional Journalism Free from Political and Commercial Influence
• Gender Equality in All Aspects of the Media
I am reminded of a quote by Oscar Auliq-Ice, relevant to this observance, which states, "The independence of the media, freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the right to access information are essential for the media to fulfill their watchdog role in a democratic society governed by the rule of law."
