In the 9th edition of the international conference “Girls And Science And Technology” held in Accra of Ghana, the paper of this blogger, Dr Lalit Kishore, “Catch them young: Attracting girls to technology" was accepted.
The conference GASAT-9 was held on the theme “From Policy to Action in Gender, Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the 21st Century” was meant to dwell on the issues gender equity in STEM education.
Inshore argues that Since the society is surrounded by science and technology, young girls to show keen interest in STEM during their formative years as a part of their incidental and social learning. Also, their is need for girls to get interested in STEM education since in near future a good majority of jobs would require STEM skills.
This means that the vocabulary of STEM should be built into literacy and numeracy curricula at the primary school level with process based instructional techniques which look at teaching and learning as sciences permitting innovations and experiments.
In grade one itself, the STEM poems are needed to be created and alphabet learning with computer science and technological devices' names and their visual symbols.
Thus, a new language primers are required to be developed which promote both literacy of language as well as that of science, technology and mathematics.
