Need to Revive Guru-Role of Teachers by Training Them as Facilitators of Learning

Updated: Jul 25, 2021

A true Guru facilitates innate learning potential of disciples. He or she fosters and nurtures the divine gifts of learning and construction of knowledge.

There is a need to revive role of the teacher as a facilitator instead of being the mere information dispenser in the classroom, I wrote at merinews.com portal (04 September, 2016) [1].

"The pivotal role of the teacher in the present knowledge society is to lead students toward self-learning. The teacher needs to become the facilitator of learning in the present times. There is a need to look at students as constructors of knowledge and teachers as the facilitators of their learning potentials," added the author.

Long ago, noted philosopher, Kahlil Gibran, had advocated the role of a teacher as a facilitator of innate potential of learning among children saying, "The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind."

According to educational researchers, a facilitator along with parting experience analyses it through dialogic techniques as well as mobilizes peer learning approaches, He or she often serve as fa facilitator who has mastery on pedagogy as well as on the subject matter to work for achieving the goal of having students take as much responsibility for their own learning as possible.

Here is an ABC poem on a facilitator:

A: Acknowledging each learner's right to be heard and valuing their diversity;
B: Believing in everyone's ability to learn, develop and change;
C: Communicating consistently and taking responsibility for his or her own thoughts, feelings, behavior, actions, values so as work toward self-development;
D: Developing and applying diverse methods to support students' learning potential;
E: Evolving self and students as a community of learners without being judgmental.
