Needed renewal of food systems for positive economies, environment and health: UN Chief

This year's #WorldFoodDay is being observed with the theme “Grow, nourish, sustain. Together. Our actions are our future”. The occasion, this year also marks the 75th foundation day of FAO to build together better food systems.

According to the UN, approximately 14% of food produced for human consumption is lost each year between the stages where it is grown or raised up to when it reaches the wholesale market. More food is wasted at the retail food and consumer stages. Furthermore, over 3 billion people in the world lack access to internet and most of them live in rural and remote areas, consequently, smallholder farmers need greater access to finance, training, innovation and technology to improve their livelihoods.

The UN Chief Guterres stressed the need for renewal of food systems for positive economies, environment and health. However, he cautioned that food systems were required 'to stay within our planet’s ecological boundaries.

Here are the ABCs of food system renewal culled out from the information that could be accessed.

A: Actions needed to strengthen food systems to protect people's livelihoods and halt climate change

C: Concern for both rising hunger among the poor and rising obesity among the well-to-do

B: broadening the cultivation to other edible food crops besides main nine food crops

D: Development of newer food systems to provide affordable and healthy diets for all

E: Evolve agriculture with focus on 'GROW-NOURISH-SUSTAIN' principles
