Night photography of lighted building: Example of Sports School at Rai

To capture a reasonable scene with limited lighting provided by usual electric fixtures, some tips can be helpful which were used for the present picture which got commendation from the portal 'Art House'.

The building of Motilal Nehru School of Sports (MNSS), Rai (Haryana, India) was subject of photography at night.

The most good school building in many European countries have arched outer walls and corridors including windows. The infrastructure and architecture with arches gives Gothic or temple-like auspiciousness as shown in the following picture.

The MNSS building with red bricks has an Indian adaptation of traditional Collegiate Gothic architecture of arches and triangulation for many of its buildings on the campus.

Around the buildings the swathes of lawns, trees, grooves, nursery, fountain with small lake, etc., that create plenty of spaces for students to relax and reflect.

The tips for the night photography for such a building are as follows.

  • Use a tripod or firm rest for the camera

  • Set the camera in aperture priority mode

  • Try out a few shutter speeds and select the best shot

  • If possible use manual focus for clarity of the lighted areas

  • Make use of low ISO setting
