Non-tilt shift photography for building and large objects

Updated: Jan 1, 2022

Non-tilt shift photography is the use of position of the camera without changing its orientation or angle so as to not disturb the plane of the image.

This type photography often has a shallow depth of field with least perspective control on the image.

The term shift, thus, stands for a linear shift of the camera always keep

ing the lens parallel to the image plane. Shift is used to adjust the position of the subject in the image area and he convergence of parallel lines is totally avoided. as when photographing tall buildings.

Where as, the term tilt is used to change and control the orientation of the plane of focus of the lens. In other words, the photographic technique of shift is used to adjust the position of the subject or part of it in the image area, technically called the focal plane.

Despite, being the most basic and frequently used technique, if you are to take shift photographs of an extended or tall building from four position, they together make a good collage. The building in the inset picture is that of Plenum School, Himachal Pradesh..
