On making a shift toward micro-learning and micro-credential based classroom instruction

A 'micro-credential' pertains to an acquired competency in a specific skill or learning task in one hour time. A certified micro-credential is earned when a learner is able to demonstrate his or her mastery over knowledge or skill related to a specific learning competence in micro-task in one class session.

However, the learning experience of the 'micro-credential session' should be 'tight-but-light' as the CBSE describes it Here the word 'tight' stands for well designed and well-executed session with almost minute-to-minute action planned (rigour and hardwork) through a learning sheet. While the word 'light' stands for the 'support' for learning to fill the learning gap and achieve mastery.

In other words, a micro-credential is the record of the mastery level learning outcome acquired by a learner subsequent to execution of well designed class-session by the instructor on a small learning segment. The learning outcome is assessed against a criterion or defined standards such as a-grade or more than 80% mastery.

Thus a microcredentials is short-duration learning task lasting for an hour with built-in formative-support along with proof for the mastery of specific learning outcome. Often, the certification for 'one credit' is done in the progress card of the child after 40 to 50-hour work on a study unit. For science practicals or skilling courses 15 hours for viva-voce / theory or background learning are devoted and 35 hours on experiments or hands-on practice.

In many schools in the West, micro-learning strategy is being used to systematise the self-paced continuous progress education, multi-level learning in small schools and higher level skilling courses or vocational courses for specific job requirement.

Here is an example of micro-credential learning sheet as an example for EVS at grade six.
