Practical Aspects of Dance Movement Therapy

American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) defines dance movement therapy (DMT) as the 'psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual, for the purpose of improving health and well-being'.

Steps in designing of DMT intervention


  • · Diagnose the client with 'Movement Analysis and Profiling' (MAP) standard tool

  • · Identify suitable dance movements from styles such as classical dance forms, ballet, folk dances, contemporary dances etc.

  • · Adapt or improvise a few selected movements to meet the needs of the client

  • · Codify the movements and identify warm-up exercises as a procedure bound therapeutic intervention

  • · Administer the intervention and do prognosis

  • · Undertake the specific remedial intervention
