Promote lesson study procedure for educators of children with special needs

Updated: Sep 8, 2021

Since a ‘Lesson Study’ is teachers' collaborative professional effort to improve their teaching and learning process or teaching practice continually to convent classroom practice into education therapy.

The collaboration of at least three functionaries in planning the research lesson, transaction, observing, and reporting of the ‘research lesson’ results is required.

A lesson study in special education is suitable for individualising classroom instruction for children with special needs.

Since the designing of Individualised Education Plan (IEP) for each special child is mandatory in special education, preparing the research lesson / intervention is to be designed.

In special education, there is no curriculum; interventions are required to be designed after the child has been diagnosed by the clinical psychologist.

Special educator is also required to carry out a review of relevant research to develop or improve the agreed area of focus and take informed and intrinsically valid decisions.

The research lesson is jointly prepared by the special educator, clinical psychologist and occupational therapist.

The intervention or research lesson is transacted on one-on-one basis or in a clinical setting by special educator in the presence of other two stakeholders. The special child is called the ‘case pupil’.

After the research lesson is over, carry out a review discussion with stakeholders to improve the lesson and take decision for further work or the remedial lesson, home support and the next lesson. In the end, write a research paper on your study for dissemination.
