Revamped CBSE science courses at secondary and senior secondary levels introduced from academic session 2026-27

From the current session (2026-27), the CBSE has notified a two-level system for Science in Class 9, offering Standard/General and Advanced courses 2020. This structure allows students to choose between general scientific understanding and more rigorous, application-based learning, enhancing specialized skill development.

 

The purported aim is to reduce rote learning and foster deeper scientific inquiry, particularly with the optional advanced level allowing students to align their curriculum with future career goals in engineering, medicine, or research.

 

The two levels of secondary science courses are as follows

 

  • The General/Standard Science focuses on fundamental scientific concepts, everyday applications, and essential knowledge suitable for most students.

  • ·Advanced Science has been designed for students intending to pursue higher-level studies in STEM. It covers higher-order thinking skills, advanced topics, and deeper theoretical understanding.

It is said that the two-level structure is slated for Class 9 and 10 to provide tailored pathways before senior secondary specialization.

 

At the Senior Secondary Science (Classes 11-12), the highlights of the curricula are as follows

 

  • ·The structured elective sciences categorized are being offered under pure sciences, usually pursued in combinations like Physics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB) or Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM), along with English.

     

  • The core subjects will be Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, while the additional/optional science subjects will include Biotechnology, Computer Science, Engineering Graphics, Informatics Practices.

 

The related academic components at the science curriculas will be as follows

  • ·General Studies: A compulsory internal assessment subject in Classes 11-12 covering science in society, technology, and sustainability.

  • · Vocational Options: Subjects like Information Technology, Retail, and Healthcare are available for students focusing on specific job roles, which can be taken as an additional subject.
