A pedagogical experiment was undertaken as a part of an action research to find the effect of road safety literacy board games on the visual discrimination competence of first graders to supplement their environmental education.
Pedagogical experiment as a method of rapid research to clarify the comparative effectiveness of educational intervention, first time use of technology, new activities, innovative methods, home-grown techniques, new content, etc.
The procedure of the experiment was development of game board, viz., traffic-lights board and road signs board; implementing the board-gaming for one hour each by children (N=10, age 5-6 years, gaming time 3 hours with 30 minute sessions) in the groups of four each; and finding the effect on visual discrimination of the experimental group. The first game used a dice and other was played like a housie.
The administration of self-made visual discrimination test using 10 items on two comparison groups matched on their achievement scores (N=10 each, other half of the same class which was lectured) was done. The treatment group performed better on the visual discrimination test (p≤ 0.05, sign test, D.F.=10) as compared to the group that was taught conventionally using the textbook and lecturing.
