Schools must emphasize proper language development for better disciplinary learning

It is a well known fact that language is the basic thinking tool for human beings to name, recognise, organize experience, communicate, and reflect upon themselves and the world around them.

Educational institutions must treat and use language is the codified form of verbal and visual thinking, initially, leading to acquisition of lower thinking skills followed by higher order thinking skills . Thus, language proficiency is necessary to learn various disciplines and across the ability spectrum of learners .

Proficiency in language is required because of the following reasons.

For children with special needs, language learning has to be phonetically sound, micro-learning based, multimodal and multisensory with a protocol of transaction linked with diagnosis and corrective over-learning, my research experience at Disha in Jaipur informs.

Language mastery is required for the following purposes.

  • To know and remember the gained knowledge

  • To acquire thinking skills

  • To communicate and relate to others in society

  • To lean and express other subjects or knowledge areas of academics

Therefore, effective teaching and learning of the school language as well as the language skills and language arts are the bedrock to learn all other knowledge areas and communicate effectively since language is deemed as mind’s voice to tell our experience to others.
