Significance of Swastika symbol in Easten Religons: A short note & a micro-video on Swastika Rangoli


In Hinduism, Swastika is an ancient symbol of auspiciousness and good fortune. There are many varieties of swastika symbols which have evolved through cultural, religious and spiritual arts of rangoli, kolam, mandana, yantra, etc.


Many Hindu homes Hindu homes, building, printed materials, invitation cards, vehicles, worship places and educational institutions, scriptures, account books, diaries, print material, equipment, ashrams, etc. don. This sign of Swastika symbolizing auspiciousness, well being, good luck, success and fortune.



Linguistically, it is a Sanskrit word with the following to root words with specific meanings.


SU: Good / Well / Auspicious

ASTI: To exist / To be


Thus, the word 'Swastika' means 'let goodness prevail' or ‘all is well’.


In Hinduism, the symbol of Swastika has four pointed-lines which stand for four-directions, four Vedas, four yugas, four life stages (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha), four ashramas, and four stages of mind's evolution ( Buddhi, Vivek, Bhav or Atm-avalokan, Atm-Gyan)


In Budhhism, the swastika is said to be consisted of Buddha’s footprints and heart.


In Jainism, it is the symbol of the seventh tirthankara and its four arms symbolize the four places a soul can be reborn in the cycle of birth and death.


In nutshell, Swastika symbol used as a symbol of divinity and spirituality in three religions of the East, namely, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
