Here are some important locomotion facts about squirrels in the light of of short video with a smart phone camera.


  • Squirrels can sprint faster than humans. Their running speed can be 20-30 kmh.

  • While jumping, the tail is held horizontally behind the squirrel and they can up to 10 times the distance than their body length

  • Tail hair have thin feather-like shape to reduces air resistance when in locomotion

  • Squirrels run zig-zag to escape predators and the tail is used as a counterbalance to steer and turn quickly

  • Squirrels are very agile in the trees even at the canopy. They love to run around in the trees to chase one another

  • The paws have ten pads which allows them to act as shock

when the squirrel lands on a surface after leaping of jumping

  • Their paws rest flat against the trunk of tree to move up and down equally well.

  • Most squirrels can swim with doggy paddle stroke
