Nation celebrates Guru Purnima on July 5 this year, to honour the teachers who work as gurus, guides, mentors and facilitators by combining the subject matter mastery and self-knowledge. Guru is supposed to have worldly knowledge or what is being known and the knowledge about himself or herself as a knower.
However, this year Guru Poojan and pAduka Poojan will be performed in various temples and educational institions by observing the social distancing norms.
A guru is regarded as a guide to the journey of life and learning in unison. In spiritual science, a person who is an authority in existential philosophy and parapsychology is known as a guru. Therefore, a guru is an evolved and self-realised spiritual guide to others to make disciples embark the journey for a purposeful life.
Sanskrit word Guru consist of two syllables 'gu' and 'ru'. Here, 'gu' denotes the darkness of spiritual ignorance. And, 'ru' represents the radiance of spiritual knowledge or self-knowledge that dispels the spiritual ignorance.
In other words, the guru is an enlightened person who dispels the darkness of spiritual ignorance by imparting self-knowledge leading to realisation of pure self.
Here is an ABC verse on guru.
A: Awakens you to the reality
B: Brilliant and wise person to shed light on the ultimate purpose of life
C: Craves for and leads an ego-free life
D: Directs other on the path of self-realisation
E: Empowers you to get free from illusions, falsehood and ignorance
Inset is my sketch note to explain what it means to be a guru.
