On April 6, the UN declared that the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is celebrated every year to acknowledge the ability of sports to inspire social change, enhance community development, provide holistic education, and promote peace. This day also commemorates the opening of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 on April 6.

The observance emphasizes the crucial role that sports play in advancing health, education, and inclusion within institutions. It is essential to recognize sports as a cost-effective yet impactful tool by encouraging folk, traditional, and local games to foster kinesthetic and cognitive development, especially since sports have evolved into a discipline driven by science and technology.

Ode to sports

Run, jump, throw, and strive,

Sports make bodies feel alive.

Friends we make while playing games,

Learning teamwork, sharing names.

Healthy bodies, clear minds too,

Sports help dreams become true.

Peace and friendship, hand in hand,

Across the world, across the land.

Math and science, body's grace,

Sports have a place in every space.

From schoolyard fun to college pride,

Sports help all walk side by side

Recognizing the connection between health and education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India has made Health and Physical Education (HPE) a mandatory subject for classes 1-12. This initiative aims to foster holistic development, enhance physical fitness, and support mental well-being. In all affiliated schools, the goal is to address sedentary lifestyles and stress among students by promoting daily sports, yoga, and games, in addition to academics.

This initiative, when utilized by various subject teachers, has the potential to integrate different disciplines by applying multiple intelligence theory and STEM education principles, which emphasize holistic education. Various sports schools, colleges, and universities, along with sports departments in academic institutions, need to collaborate to strengthen the discipline of physical education, both as a subject area and as a cross-cutting area of learning.
