Statehood Day of Arunachal Pradesh & International Mother Language Day: Hindi is lingua franca

Arunachal Pradesh celebrates statehood day on February 20 followed by the International Mother Language Day on February 21.

According to Government of Arunachal Pradesh, the number and diversity of languages/dialects spoken in the state are not conclusively known. 30, possibly 50, distinct languages/dialects in addition to innumerable dialects and sub-dialects coinciding with tribal areas are in use.

"Some of them (dialect) are Nyishi, Dafla, Miji, Adi, Gallong, Wancho, Tagin, Hill Miri, Mishui, Mohpa, Nocte, Aka, Tangsa, Khamti. Vast majority of them belong to the Tibeto - Burman language family. Hindi is making constant inroads. Nagamese is fairly widely used as a link language in some areas," reports the website of the state Government.

However, the two most popular languages with the populace are Hindi and English. According to a link [1], " A little known fact: Arunachal Pradesh is also a flourishing centre of Hindi in the North East. Hindi is also the language of debate in the state legislative assembly and of banter on the school ground...Hindi has emerged as a lingua franca."
