STEM Education in light of challenges of fast changing smart technology driven society: A short note and ABC poem on STEM instructional strategies

SHORT NOTE

The 21st Century is marked with challenges thrown up by globalisation, digitisation, smart technologies, information overload and consumerist society along with acute and complex problems of sustainability, climate change, waste management, ponzi schemes, privatisation, industrialization and commercialisation of basic human needs for survival- food, infrastructure, education, health and employment.

Since science and technology driven world has created new challenges, well-meaning researchers and educators are advocating STEM education to meet the present challenges. Even at the school level, STEM education is being tried in big way in many countries to make education cross-curricular through interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches which should be solution provider to the current challenges.

For STEM education preparation of institutions and functionaries is a must. However, some of the strategies the learning and dynamic institutions can be tried are given as an ABC poem as follows.

STEM Instructional Strategies: ABC Poem

A: Aligning STEM with prescribed curriculum with cross-curriculum projects or multi-disciplinary lesson studies or action research

B: Beginning with micro-project (30-40 hours; 1 credit) by collaborating across subjects as classroom intervention

C: Carrying out explorations for STEM integration to 'Real-World Challenges' such as pollution control, cleanliness, health-and-wellness, waste management; re-use & alternative use method, sustainability, climate change

D: Developing field visit projects to study cases and examples of STEM integration or organize one-week internship programmes module to learn from experts and exemplary organizations

E: Evolving STEM-related learning modules from student-proposed projects with guidance from school and outside as part of the multi-disciplinary team
