Students & teachers be trained in on-line communication etiquette when schools open with 'new norm'

Schools have remained closed since March in the country resulting in loss of studies and late switch over to on-line teaching with teachers hardly prepared or trained to the new mode of on-line commutation and interaction.

The union government and central education ministry have permitted the students of grades 11 to 12 to visit the school from September 21 on their own free will for consultations.

I think, the schools must educate themselves and visiting students in on-line communicative etiquette before taking up the blended method of teaching that combines face-to-face learning with shorter school hours and smaller groups of students along with on-line instruction.

The online students' and teachers' communication etiquette are to be different than in a face-to-face setting. The reason being that during online communication social and academic interactions gets based on exchange of written or typed text often called 'texted messages'.

Furthermore, in on-line social environment, the body language is missing, therefore, the written or texted messages are to be conveyed and received with right linguistic and intent aspects.

Here are the ABCs of on-line communication etiquette.

A: Avoiding being annoying, hurtful and sarcastic or keeping the on-line learning environment positive psychology based.

B: Being respectful and aware of non-use of strong language which implies both students and teachers should read the texted message aloud and edit it before sending or apply the text-speak option to listen to message and then edit before sending

C: Communication should make use of available academic vocabulary and signal verbs, which however is acquired a few hours of training to become apt in on-line communication

D: Do not use written short-cuts and keep the communication formal to reflect learnership

E: Emotions and feelings are to kept under control through forgiveness and polite corrective feedback
