Study of Reactions of Teacher Educators toward Visual Symbols as Aids for Cognitive Skilling

Updated: Sep 4, 2021

Abstract

There exist evidences to show that cognitive ability can be enhanced using visual symbols that closely represent what they are suppose to look like and what they are associated with. To put this theory into action, one-day skill training (Hours=4; Sessions=4) of teacher educators of Jaipur was organized so that the skill of drawing visual symbols; pictograms and iconic symbols could be taken to prospective teachers to enliven their classroom instruction. The first session was on the role of visual symbols in learning process and importance of forming mental images before the use of abstract symbols. The next three sessions were related to the modern day visual communication skill executed according to an established convention of visual symbols.

A practice to draw 30 visual symbols through successive drawing was given to the participating teacher educators (N=25, mean age= 35 years) of elementary school pupil-teachers. A sign test on the sample showed significantly positive reactions (p≤0.01, D.F. =1) of the participants towards the use of visual symbols in the teaching-learning process.
