Abstract

It is being exceedingly felt that the quality of teacher education determines the quality of teachers and classroom processes through innovative ways of teacher preparation in pre-service, in-service and distant modes of learning. The paper discusses a recent innovation of Teacher Education Units (TDUs) for capacity building of both educators and teachers through specially created units that integrate content, pedagogy and classroom organization. The TDU-based teacher preparation designs of the Open University, UK, under TESSA-Project in Africa and recently launched TESS-India have been analysed. The reactions of the participants (N=70, mixed group of educators, teachers and administrators) at a recent (November 2012) four-day workshop for developing TDUs under TESS-India project revealed significantly favourable reactions of the participants (p<0.01, DF=1) towards the innovation. The implication of the micro-study is that the District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) can revitalize themselves by taking the lead in making use of TDUs for teacher preparation in an integrated way.
