Teachers need to develop soothing voice & measured speaking tone for artful classroom communication

One of the spoken word arts in Indian culture is the speech style of ascetics and sages – slow, measured, calm speaking style of about 80 words per minute in a resonating voice coming from tummy. This can also be seen as a part of National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 which is emphasizing ‘art-integrated learning’.

The NEP-2020 says the following in respect of art-integrated learning.

Art-integration is a cross-curricular pedagogical approach that utilizes various aspects and forms of art and culture as the basis for learning of concepts across subjects. As a part of the thrust on experiential learning, art-integrated education will be embedded in classroom transactions not only for creating joyful classrooms, but also for imbibing the Indian ethos through integration of Indian art and culture in the teaching and learning process at every level. This art-integrated approach will strengthen the linkages between education and culture.

If one goes by Indian culture, the spoken word art for classroom communication, it recommends the use of the following essential words as the vocabulary of the teacher.

Absolutely – accomplish – achieve – basic – beneficial – better - critical – dependable – empower - free – healthy – improve – independent – love - likable – more – personalized – proven – solution –step-by-step – support –strong – top – uncover – unfold – unique – winning – unlimited – yes

From the textbooks and supplementary readers, teachers must select short passages for reading to practice in moderate tone from tummy but with calm-resonating voice of about 80 words per minute for a soothing effect on students to get attentive which is one of the basic listening skills. Teachers must also practice breathing from tummy till they become spontaneous in it. It has been found that speaking from tummy also exercises lungs to make them stronger.
