International Dance Day-2021 is being observed on April 29 with the theme ‘Purpose of dance' encourage participation and education in dance as well as multiple applications of dance.
Created by the International Theatre Institute( ITI )as partner for the performing arts of UNESCO in 1982
Here is my write up on sitting and standing dances for therapeutic use.
Dance, the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music is done within a given space.
This performing art form can have a purpose (context, culture, cognitive use, amusement use, therapeutic use, gratification use, message, communication, aesthetics, talent exhibition, etc.) with selected sequences of human body’s movements, gestures and expressions.
If the space is to be kept limited both for simplicity and grace, standing dance or sitting is to be preferred.
For children with special needs to learn a desired movement, one at a time for motor skill development by taking delight in the body and limbs at one place.
When used as movement therapy, one dance step is done slowly, first as a assisted exercise, them as practice with a gradual increase of pace and tempo.
Exercise-based dances like ‘lazium’ or lezim’ which involves cross-lateral movements have a great potential for their use as dance therapy with differently abled children.
Also, some of the tribal dances which are graceful, slow and have simple standing dance steps are also adaptable for dance therapy.
