It is former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam's birth anniversary today (October 15) and the day is observed as World Student's Day who himself was a hardworking student and extra-ordinary teacher besides being true scientist.
He had said on a few occasions he should be remembered as a teacher who believed in self-reflection. He remained a teacher till the end since he died while addressing students and teachers at an event.
The idea to which Dr Kalam subscribed was that of reflective teaching which stands for reviewing critically what what one does in the classroom. In other words, a reflective teacher is well versed in the skills of self-observation, self-evaluation and self-improvement. In nutshell, a reflective teacher is critical about his or her own actions or does action research to improve his or her practice..
I feel that teacher education and development should be based on reflective training. However, the present state of teacher education is highly unsatisfactory since most teacher educators lack mastery on teaching methods and not good role models of reflective teaching as brought out by work as shown in the inset clippings.
