Ubuntu: Adapted African Parable as Value Education Tool to Emphasise Virtue of Cooperation over Competition through Three-Stage Discussion Method

Parable

Once, a rich Western man visited an African tribal village with a basket of sweets. He proposed a competitive game to the tribal children who were playing a group-game with team spirit under a tree.

He placed a basket of sweets near the tree and made the children stand 100 meters away. Then announced that whoever reaches first would get all the sweets in the basket.

When he said 'ready steady go!

The tribal children held each other's hands, ran together towards the tree, and caught hold of the basket. They divided the sweets equally among themselves, ate the sweets and shouted with joy in their dialect 'Ubuntu!' which meant 'I am because we are!'
