UN celebrates English Language Day to promote multilingualism

Today, on April 23, English Language Day is being celebrated to mark the birth and death anniversaries of noted writer William Shakespeare and promote multilingualism.

According to the UN, recognition to six working languages at the organization is to promote 'harmonious communication among peoples, multilingualism is of particular importance to the United Nations.' Moreover, English is also the language of international communication, the media and the internet.

"By promoting tolerance, multilingualism ensures effective and increased participation of all in the Organization’s work, as well as greater effectiveness, better outcomes and more involvement." stated the UN informing that the event was established by UN's Department of Public Information in 2010 with an aim 'to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization.'

It is held that learning of English leads to getting a good job in India in a multinational company as well improving chances of admission in a foreign university besides finding work abroad.

Multilingualism pertains to use of more than one language to facilitate cultural openness and have a worldwide reach. In most schools of the world, bilingualism is being promoted these days with English as a second language. It is said that children who learn to speak more than one language have better brain development.
