Understanding Ontology: Quotes and ABCs

Ontology quotes

Ontology is the branch of philosophy that studies concepts such as existence, being, becoming, and reality. It is sometimes referred to as the science of being and belongs to the major branch of philosophy known as metaphysics. ~ WikiQuote

Our acceptance of an ontology is, I think, similar in principle to our acceptance of a scientific theory, say a system of physics;we adopt, at least insofar as we are reasonable, the simplest conceptual scheme into which the disordered fragments of raw experience can be fitted and arranged. ~ Willard Van Orman Quine

'What is there?’ It can be answered, moreover, in a word — ‘Everything’ — and everyone will accept this answer as true. ~ Willard Van Orman Quine

I'm apt to get drunk on words...Ontology: the word about the essence of things; the word about being. ~ Madeleine L'Engle

Nothing that is so is so. ~William Shakespeare

In every phenomenon, the beginning remains hidden, and the origin comes to light only to the extent that the phenomenon, revealing itself, withdraws. ~ Martin Heidegger
