Use bibliotherapy to reduce depression and hypertension: Spl on World Hypertension Day

Every year on May 17, World Hypertension Day is observed for creating awareness about causes, symptoms and treatment of hypertension. However, early detection and treatment can save one from the silent killer in terms of high blood pressure. For mild disorder, bibliotherapy can be used to remove the cause of hypertension.


Bibliotherapy is a creative language art therapy or supportive psycho-therapy applied with identified and created specific texts or content after diagnosis of an individual by a certified therapist. Many bibliotherapists regard reading therapy as a part of writing therapy to correct negative feelings, thinking and emotions or complexes that are the causes of depression.


The psycho-therapist who designs intervention has be to well versed with broader therapeutic techniques of the following kinds.

  • Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT}

  • Emotions regulation therapy

  • Poetry therapy

  • Positive psychotherapy

  • Storytelling therapy

After diagnosis, the content is chosen or written in relationship to client's mental and spiritual health condition of the client. After, 30 hours of administered. It has been found that bibleotherapy is effective for clients diagnosed as mild to moderate depression, alcohol dependence, self-harm acts, thoughtless rash behaviour and panic disorder.


In bibliotherapy, the main consideration is placed on the therapist for selecting or creating right kind for therapy sessions along with spoken word art skills or recitation skills. Ultimately the client is to get to facilitate the therapeutic reading skill acquisition and symptom reduction for depression and hypertension.
