Claves are the part of Afro-Cuban folk percussion and concussion music instruments used to produce to rhythmic patterns of sounds and beats in which two sticks are struck together. However, claves as stick idiophones are popular in Cuba. At many places, they are also called rumba sticks.
Claves consist of a pair of short, wooden sticks about 20-25 centimetres long and about 2.5 centimetres in diameter.
Claves of hollow wood and carved in the middle are preferred to resonate and amplify the un-pitched sound.
In India too claves have been used as part of folk music and woodrose sticks are used in this country.
For children with learning disabilities many music therapists have used claves successfully for mildly and moderately impaired children. For fine motor development of children, this can be a good aid.
In early childhood education, to improve musical-rhythmic intelligence of children claves can be used with advantage because of the simplicity of the instrument.
