Use international phonetic alphabet system in bilingual situation is viable, reveals study

Abstract

Based on demands of present digital age; proved efficacy of phonic method of learning English; and enhanced social learning of over-age non-starter and drop-out rural girls in a small bridge school ( N=25, vertical grouping of 9-14 years, single teacher, Hindi and English starting in grade one), a lesson study (popular action research method originated in Japan) in the use of phonetic alphabet and Hindi-Devnagagri script was done through expert validation and creating a standard lesson for sequential listening and speaking of phonetic alphabet. The research lesson was prepared with first six phonetic alphabet (A-Alpha, B-Bravo; C-Charlie / D-Delta, E-India, J-Juliet) through recitation and use of flash cards emphasising look-and-say method. Along with practicing teacher, two external experts helped in preparing, rehearsing, observing and reviewing lesson. The lesson was found efficacious on expert validation and it was suggested that a 64-page primer be prepared for learning 26 phonetic English alphabet and corresponding Hindi alphabet. This primer may be used as a first level of learning both for bi-lingual learning in multi-level learning situation suitable for single-teacher small schools.
