Tamarind or Imali (Hindi name) is reported to be an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory fruit having helpful polyphenols in it.
If taken properly it lowers risks of heart disease and diabetes.
Pulp extract in hot water or as beverage, it is said be helpful in the following ways
· reduces body weight
· reverses fatty liver disease
· mitigates frequent urination problem
· treats diarrhea
· reduces constipation problem
Its seed extract helps in lowering blood sugar
In cooking and as Chaat making ingredient, tamarind has a high nutrient value because it contains vitamins C, B and K in it. It also has Magnesium, Potassium, Iron and Calcium to help the body keep fit when taken moderately. Besides these, it has small amounts of fibre, protein, glucose and and fat in it.
In short, tamarind has vitamins, minerals, amino acids and some plant compounds and has medicinal value when taken occasionally as a hot beverage.
It must be used in small quantities since it is high in calories compared to other table fruits.
One is to simply eat the fruit from the raw pods, while candies and other market produced products from tamarind can be harmful at times
Beverage and consumption
· Heat one cup of water to a boil.
· Combine boiling water and 2-4 pinches tamarind pulp in a glass
· Stir with spoon or fork
· Boil again and let stand for 2-3 minutes
· Drink it hot sip by sip either half hour after dinner if you have constipation
