The United Nations International Day of Vesak in 2026 was observed on April 30 to commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha, emphasizing compassion and peace. While the UN marks this date, However, the actual local celebrations across Asia may vary depending on regional lunar calendars. In India, the festival is called Buddha Jayanti and this year, it is being observed on May 1. Originated from India, the Buddhist festival acknowledge the contribution of Buddhism to spirituality and human well-being for over 2,500 years

Wishing Happy Vesak Day to all, UN Chief said, "Guided by the Buddha’s example, let us summon our shared humanity and build the more peaceful and sustainable world all people need and deserve."

My article published in merinews.com was picked up by the Buddhist Channel, Bangkok, Thailand to disseminate the message of the Buddhist path to world peace on the Day of Vesak (see inset clipping).

HERE ARE MY HAIKU ON BUDDHISM ON VESAK DAY

Desires cause sorrows

Be simple, be equitable

Care-n-share is way out

~*~

Non-violence, goodwill

Compassion, selfless service,

Can redeem humans

~*~

Embrace unity

Co-exist with inclusion

For peace all around
