Wasps: Pictures and important facts

Today, I found a yellow jacket wasp in my garden who sat on a lotus leaf of the plant grown in a round earthen pot. I quietly took a few pictures. Luckily, it did not get disturbed or else, I would have to run back to my house to shut the door fearing a chase and attack.


Important information


  • A wash is a narrow-waisted insect of the order Hymenoptera excluding bees, ants and similar looking broad-waisted sawflies


  • It classification is as follows: Class‎-‎Insecta; Order‎-‎Hymenoptera; Superorder‎-‎Hymenopterida; Kingdom‎-‎Animalia

  • Unlike bees, wasps do not die after one sting and sting someone quite a few times. He few stings are not that dangerous. However, 30-50 stings of a wasp can be fatal.

  • Wasps, as predators play a vital ecological role in controlling pests such as greenfly and caterpillars.

  • Wasps, when disturbed can chase and sting you in hoards. A few intial wasp stay a smelly odour-chemical on you making it easy for other wasps to find you.

  • The faster you run, the intense is the chase.

  • Bald-faced hornets are the most aggressive wasps that love to eat nectar and fruit juice

  • Wasps have a life of a few months to one year


Common home remedies for for relief from the sting are as follows


  • Removing of sting it left in the skin

  • coating the sting site with baking soda paste

  • rubbing the site with an aluminum based deodorant or talcum powder / cold cream
