What should get into COVID-19 basic literacy course: Focus group decides


A focus group (N=3: Special Educator, health expert, researcher) was held for two hours to decide about the the precept of Covid-19 literacy and content of 10 hour course for the functionaries of the institution spread over 5 days (two hours each day with three 40 minute sessions). It was also agreed to hold one-hour test on a day in the next week.


The outcomes the the focus group were as follows.


1. A statement indicating how ‘COVID-19 Literacy’ be viewed as which was as follows

Literacy about any area of concern is required in the present times and COVID-19 Literacy would stand for the awareness, knowledge and action at the primary level for preventive health and physical well being to face the challenge . The functionaries in societal institutions are required to become literate about COVID-19, they can use the basic knowledge in the form of acquired literacy as a tool to fight the disease caused by little known Novel Corona Virus with emergent variants. Also, well acquired COVID-19 literacy can transform lives to adapt to new challenging times.


2. The course content consisting of 15 activity-cum-worksheets with reading and drawing activities be prepared by involving a course coordinator and two trainers


3. Each session should be introduced with a ten minute presentation and spoken transaction of the narration and and instructions for transaction the worksheets.

The new-words should be pronounced phonically with echo-speaking at least three times.


4. The course content may have the following components

a. Alphabet from A to Z to related words

b. Visual literacy through 20 through visual-codes

c. Terms and glossary

d. Acronyms and abbreviations

e. Prevention measures and precautions

f. Basic facts

g. Frequently asked questions

h. Dual code sketch note sheets and slogan posters

i. Short comprehension passages

j. Rhymes, pattern poetry, slogans, poster


5. It was also decided that a two-day ‘Training of Trainers’ should be organised by the course designers
