Why to fuss and flurry about the New Year Eve!

Reproduced write up [1}

The newspapers' ads and handbills delivered by newspaper hawkers concealed inside the leaves of the paper are trying to sell the New Year Eve (NYE) and many are going to celebrate being the part of an externally managed event. Both the markets and event managers are going to have brisk business on December 31, the NYE.

However, there are some who think that the New Year day is just like any other day. "All the fuss is created for the day by the market forces and entertainment industry. We need to spiritualize ourselves to rise above the bondage of time," said the follower of a well known spiritual leader who lives close to my house.

In Focus"New Year's Eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights." That's what had said Hamilton Wright Mabie many years ago when market forces started linking the special days to flame the mimetic desires to make profits.

Here are a few thoughts to ponder over and transcend the celebrations of various days and trivialize and ritualize life.

  • Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. -Hal Borland

  • Drop the last year into the silent limbo of the past. Let it go, for it was imperfect, and thank God that it can go. -Brooks Atkinson

  • Time has no divisions to mark its passage; there is never a thunder-storm or blare of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new month or year. Even when a new century begins it is only we mortals who ring bells and fire off pistols. -Thomas Mann

  • The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. -G.K. Chesterton
