World Migratory Bird Day observed ~Lalit Kishore

Each year, on second Saturday of May and October, World Migratory Bird Day coordinated by UNEP is observed. The observance falls on May 9 in 2020.

According to the UN, with an annual production of more than 300 million tons, plastic is one of the most widely used materials in the world. What often escapes one’s attention is that the plastic is used for its main purpose for only a moment compared with its lifecycle of 20 to 500 years.

The UN has suggested the following to fight plastic pollution.

-Reduce, reuse and recycle - Limit your use of plastic materials and replace them with eco-friendly alternatives, use and dispose of plastics sustainably

-Clean up - Join clean-up activities in your area, whether at beaches or along rivers

-Spread the word - Support local and global action against excessive, unnecessary use and detrimental disposal of plastic.

"Migratory species move across the globe, running, swimming, or in the case of birds flying, connecting countries, people and continents through their migration routes. This migration can only be accomplished when animals are able to access the different sites and habitats that they rely upon along their pathways. These pathways transcend national borders, national plans and conservation priorities of any single country. Migratory birds connect countries and their conservation requires cooperation between countries and across national boundaries," stated UN website last year
