World Post Day observed; Indian Postal Service's braving the COVID-19 lauded

World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 to highlight the importance of the postal services. The observance was approved by UPU Congress, Tokyo, Japan as proposed by the Indian delegation.




Postal systems have been in vogue for many centuries with people sending letters imitially delivered on foot or on horseback by special messengers. In the late 1600s national postage systems were set up in many countries. And, in late 1800s a global postal service was initiated which was very slow.


The UPU was established in 1874 leading to better and efficient postal services across the world which was co-opted by the United Nations later.


It has been found that the functionaries of the Indian Postal Service while braving the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure distribution of testing kits. medicines and money across the nation.


In some schools the following poem was common earlier: Rat a tat – tat / Who is that ? / It is the postman / With letters in a bag / He brings letters from far and near / From my friends who are very dear. The poem was taught as part of vocab building about five common occupations
