The UN declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated every year to show how important independent media is. It stands up against attacks on journalists' freedom and remembers those journalists who lost their lives while doing their jobs. This day reminds governments to keep their promise to support freedom of expression. The theme for this year is "Shaping a Future of Peace," which focuses on keeping journalists safe and highlights how free media helps protect democratic values, especially with the increasing global threats.

Since 1993, UNESCO has organized the Global Conference every year. This event allows journalists, civil society members, government officials, academics, and the general public to talk about new challenges to press freedom and the safety of journalists. They also work together to find solutions.

This year's sub-themes include:

• Safety of Women and Men Journalists and Media Workers

• Independent and Professional Journalism free from Political and Commercial Influence

• Gender Equality in All Aspects of the Media

"3 May acts as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics," stated UNESCO.

I remember a quote by Oscar Auliq-Ice for this observance: "Independence of the media, freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the right to access information are essential for the media to do their job as watchdogs in a democratic society that follows the rule of law."

A Limerick on Enslaved Media

The screen shows a curated lie,

As the critical thinker asks why.

With a shout and a sneer,

They peddle in fear,

And watch democratic hopes die.
