The World Sketchnote Day is observed on January 11 each year since 2016 to highlight the use of sketchnotes in daily life and education. In simple words, a sketchnote is a composition with key words and phrases about a thing - an event, travel memories, lists, lecture, interaction, etc. - with simple graphics or visuals.
The advantage of learning and using sketchnote is twofold: it improves memory and communication with understanding due to summarising information through simple visuals or graphics.
For creating a sketch note of an event such as a lecture, it requires listening skills blended with visualisation skills in terms of visual codes. Similarly, for preparing sketch notes out of a textual material, it requires sifting of main ideas and linking them to visual codes.
Practice in sketchnoting makes one think creatively and use sketches and words to produce a summary for long term memory and quick revision. Sketchnoting builds on this, with an individual taking notes in an interesting, memorable way.
In India, Delhi-based medical physicist, Deepak Arora is a noted sketch note expert.
