World Sparrow Day: Bring sparrows back to houses

The World Sparrow Day got celebrated on March 20 to highlight the need to protect conserve this erstwhile common chirpy bird. In the urban areas, the house sparrows have almost disappeared.

It may be recalled that the observance is an initiative jointly undertaken by the Nature Forever Society of India raised by Mohammed Dilawar along with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France.

Around World Sparrow Day, many nature enthusiasts organize activities for providing water trays and nest houses for feeding small birds during upcoming summer days.

According to nature conservationists and media reports on AIR, the increased use of pesticides, change in the pattern of buildings and gardens missing from the houses have become the main factors why the number of sparrows has declined sharply in the past few years.

Also, the radiation from the mobile and the TV towers has also been a cause of death of sparrows. Birds navigate by sensing the earth's magnetic fields and mobile radiations are known to disturb them and interfering with bird's ability to move around, adds AIR. Moreover, the radiations from the mobile towers, do not allow the eggs to be hatched property resulting in still births of bay sparrows.
