C'Wealth Findel CASTME Award 2022 to Dr Lalit Kishore: Abstract of Innovative STEAM Project

The innovative STEAM project, "TOWARDS REUSING PLASTICS TRASH OF SCHOOL AND NEARBY VILLAGES FOR STEAM EDUCATION RELATED TO CLIMATE CHANGE AWARENESS AND SUSTAINABILITY" which was led by Dr Lalit Kishore in the first half of 2022 at the Plenum School in Himachal Pradesh, has chosen for one the five awards among the entries from 54 countries from the STEM educators working at primary, secondary, teritiary and community levels.

Here is the abstract of the award-winning entry that links Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics along with creating awareness about sustainabilty and climate change among school students.

Abstract: A STEAM based project was developed and tried out with high school students in small residential school in Himachal Pradesh - a hill state in North India, with an aim to create awareness about climate change and sustainability among students. The project was done in three weeks with each week devoted to readiness phase, transactional phase and concluding phase respectively. The material used for the project was the discarded plastic bottles of various types thrown in and around the school. The collected bottles were used for science experiences, low-level technology experiences imparted through craft work; engineering experiences were given through use of common tools; math experiences were given through collection and analysis of data, and art experiences were imparted by decorating bottles with oil paints. Also, activity sheets and learning sheets were produced to link the project to science content and reusing discarded material under-scored the sustainability principles. The project resulted into creating 20 project briefs for STEAM experiences and 12 learning sheets to relate various concepts to the science curriculum. The project led to learning both by the teacher as project lead and students. The concluding phase afforded documentation of the experience for dissemination and further work to extend and refine the project work.
