COVID challenge:Educational institutions need to adapt digital pedagogy to create virtual classrooms

Two years of COVID-19 crisis has changed the face of education and new normals are in the offing for 2022 onward. It is being held at policy levels that both for teacher development and learning by students in distance learning through virtual schools and classrooms is required to be made mandatory as a part of hybrid model of instruction.

It is time for transitional shift from face-to-face to virtual learning. Consequently, virtual schools/ classroom are required to re-construct their social pedagogy and instructional pedagogy, which requires training to the school functionaries, both teaching and non-teaching to use technology-enabled communication channels and smart classroom instructional tools.

Sudden switch over without appropriate preparation and teacher development is causing burnout and anxiety among teachers and students both.

New social pedagogy requirements

  • Social pedagogy requires training of both teachers and learners in self-motivation and self-discipline as the pre-condition to on-line learning through teacher-webinars and student-webinars

  • It also requires prior skill training in the apt use of virtual platforms for teaching and learning

New instructional pedagogy requirements

  • Moreover, virtual learning requires access or availability of a variety of instructional tools and developed skillfulness for teaching concepts and topics

  • Further, communication skills for student engagement with a felt social presence of the teacher with his or her students.

The new educational normals caused by Covid-19 has thrown up new challenges to the classroom processes for adapting digital tools to teach and learn online for apt education in the near and distint future
