Education can be a crucial component of development and a powerful driver of on-ongoing technological advancement. And, as a part of the governance, it must aim at an holistic individual and societal transformation along with better opportunities for economic growth.
UNESCO [1] is promoting Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in 'response to the urgent challenges facing our planet' by empowering learners and people with the 'knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and behaviors to live in a way that is good for the environment, economy, and society.'
UNESCO states, "It (ESD) encourages people to make smart, responsible choices that help create a better future for everyone. It enhances skills, knowledge, and opportunities, contributing to a more equitable and prosperous future. Education also plays a vital role in improving health, gender equality, and reducing poverty, making it a key driver of overall development, adding that ESD is capable of empowering individuals to make informed decisions and take action to address global challenges like climate change and various prevalent inequalities.
According to an AI Overview on 'Education as a Component of Development (ECD)' reveals that such an education must foster 'critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-confidence, leading to personal growth and empowerment' to become a part of the educated and skilled workforce contributing to 'economic growth, innovation, and technological advancement.' The benefits of ECD could be in the forms of 'social and economic development,' 'gender equality,' 'better health outcomes' and ' escaping from poverty cycle,' besides others.
Thus, as a blogger, Kishore [3] (2025), i would like to say that in case we wish to make education is a fundamental and central component in the process of development and growth of society and learners, at the educational institution level, learning in the classrooms must be geared around development the higher level applied thinking skills such as critical thinking, creative thinking, design thinking and reflective thinking for the real world problem solving.
