Following the National Education Policy-2020, which emphasizes courses focused on employable skills and education for sustainable development, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced 'Entrepreneurship' as a comprehensive subject. Additionally, it has been included as a topic in business studies by the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE) at the senior secondary level. For social sciences, including entrepreneurship, which possess their own terminology, specialized vocabulary, and language, an immersion approach to classroom instruction has been recommended.
Immersion method entails the acquisition of subject-specific language, which encompasses a unique technical culture distinct from social language. It is utilized in bilingual education, where students learn a second language, referred to as L2, through instruction across various subjects. The primary objective of immersion programs is to foster bilingualism and biculturalism.
The immersion approach is an educational strategy in which a second or target language serves as the medium for teaching standard academic subjects. Rather than treating a language as a separate subject, students are immersed in it, naturally absorbing grammar, vocabulary, and cultural nuances through daily communication and coursework. Educators employ visual aids, physical gestures, and contextual clues instead of translating into the students' native language. The focus is on communication, with the main aim being the understanding and expression of ideas, while accuracy in the language becomes a natural secondary outcome.
For senior secondary students preparing for higher education and the global workforce, the immersion approach presents significant benefits. The target language is utilized exclusively for all core subjects and classroom interactions. Ultimately, this dynamic technique encourages students to venture beyond their comfort zones, fostering the resilience and adaptability necessary to thrive in diverse environments, whether they are pursuing an international degree or entering a multilingual workplace.
The best way to get into teaching commerce is through immersion approach is through a triangulated lesson study. An effort was made in a local school by triangulated group with two experts from outside for a few days as an action research and write a paper for which a proposal abstract was prepared as follows.
.
Title: Entrepreneurship Education at School Level in India: An Experiment with Commerce Teacher’s In-House Capacity Building through Lesson Study on the Topic Through Triangulated Focus Group
Proposal abstract: Subsequent to the National Education Policy-2020 which is emphasising employable skills courses and education for sustainable development, entrepreneurship as a full-fledged subject has been introduced by the CBSE and as a topic in business studies by the RBSE at the senior secondary level. However, the policy demands schools and teachers to get enterprising, innovate and experiment for capacity building of commerce teachers to teach the new subject area in a pedagogical sound way. Keeping this in view, a triangulated research lesson on the immersion method of classroom instruction under the guidance of three-member focus group was conducted that combined the technical language of the topic and social language. The lesson consisted of presentation of dual coded overview of the topic followed by the reinforcement of the technical words through linkage to social language through two kinds of word-puzzles and words-housie game. The method worked as as a systematic way of teacher growth and understanding of the topic by the students of senior secondary students (N=15; Age: 15-17 years, Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education) who reacted significantly positively towards the pedagogy employed for Entrepreneurship Education. The paper describes the development of the research lesson, material for its transaction and analysis of the comments of the teachers and students. The conclusion is that learning by doing in a cycle of planning, reflection and improvement builds the capacity of teachers and empowers students towards immersive learning.
