Bhavi Nirman Society (BNS), Chaksu-based NGO's project "Imparting Experiences for Science Processes and Laboratory Techniques to Rural Muslim Girls of Bridge School with Discarded Ball Point Pens" has won the Findel-CASTME Protect Our Planet Award-2022.
The project was implemented by Rama Sharma and Beena Mali at Nikhar Bridge School which was designed, guided and documented by Dr Lalit Kishore and field-assisted by Giriraj Prasad Sharma of the NGO.
The Commonwealth Association of Science, Technology and Mathematics Educators (CASTME) along with Findel International Education Resources and Philip Harris give awards to best STEM education projects from across the world which address the social or human context of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The award scheme is being run by CASTME since 1974 with 'an aim of sharing best practice across the STEM disciplines and to demonstrate the importance of STEM to local environments, schools and communities' by recognizing the innovative STEM education projects. Three Findel-CASTME awards, namely, Education Award, Protect Our Planet Award and Community Award are given presently which on the basis of ten-point criteria by a team of experts.
The ten criteria for evaluation are: Increasing STEM awareness in the everyday world; Improving standards of literacy and numeracy; Originality; Creativity and Inventiveness; Practical usage; Social relevance; Contribution to society; Positive effects on gender issues; Demonstration of effective project management; and Clarity and a high standard of presentation, organisation and structure. " Any group or individual involved in any form of education in the widest senses, formal or informal, within societies can enter including pre-school, Primary or Secondary. Additionally, Tertiary education projects can be entered from school, college, university or from communities," state CASTME
