In his message on the occasion of IWD-2025 on March 8, UN Chief António Guterres stated, "When women and girls can rise, we all thrive..When the doors of equal opportunity are open for women and girls, everyone wins. Equal societies are more prosperous and peaceful – and the foundation of sustainable development."
He urged the world community to 'keep working to level the playing field for women and girls' and take 'action to unlock finance so countries can invest in equality – and to prioritize those investments.' He added, "Together, let’s stand firm in making rights, equality and empowerment a reality for all women and girls, for everyone, everywhere." He called for action to remove the obstacles to women and girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematicst (STEM) fields besides actions to 'end all forms of violence against women and girls' and 'secure women’s full participation in decision-making, including in peacebuilding.'
There a need to commit to break down barriers to women's education and participation in development by creating a more inclusive world. All out efforts should be made to empower and support women as well as their ways of learning as Diane Mariechild has rightly said. "A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to care, nurture, and transform."
A PBI release said, "International Women's Day is celebrated around the world on 8th March. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements across national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political boundaries. The theme of International Women’s Day 2025 is 'For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.' This year’s theme calls for action to unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all and an inclusive future where no one is left behind. Central to this vision is empowering the next generation—youth, particularly young women and adolescent girls—as catalysts for lasting change."
