As we know that in a sentence, often the two adjoining words are linked, merged or joined to each other to become fluent in spoken language. The linked words when spoken together sound different than the when the spoken separately, Linking is the merging of different words together until they sound like they're just one word.
We must practice a smooth link from a word ending in /d/ sound into a word beginning with /l/ sound by using a technique called lateral aspiration which allows to two sounds to merge as part of speaking skill development and enhancement of verbal intelligence.
The lateral aspiration spoken skill practice of smooth merger of /d/ and /l/ of two words must be carried out for few hours to improve conversational English. Aspiration is a short ‘explosion’ of air when one makes /d/ sound.
To perfect the technique, pronounce the /d/ sound by sudden releasing the entire tip of the tongue from the tooth ridge (practice it independently with phonological awareness) and immediately link it to an /l/ sound by releasing only the sides of the tongue. It can be thought of as stopping the air with /d/, but releasing it as /l/.
Practice linking /d/ and /l/ using lateral aspiration with the word-pair 'good‿luck' and the sentence 'Wish you good‿luck on the hard_language test today.'
A list of lateral aspiration related pair of words is given in the following box
