Lord Shantinath, whose jayanti is being observed on may 15, 2026, was the 16th Tirthankara of Jainism in the present cosmic age. He is uniquely revered in Jain cosmology as one of the few beings to attain the triple status of Tirthankara within a single lifetime.

Lord Shantinath had emphasized 'Tapa,' austerity and penance practice. Thus, tapa is a foundational principle in Jainism designed to purify the soul, burn away accumulated karmic matter or Nirjara, and stop the influx of new karma or Samvara. It is a form of voluntary self-restraint where a practitioner gives up physical comforts to discipline the mind and senses.

TAPA OF A JAIN FOLLOWER: A POEM

A gentle hand, I hold my want,

No greedy rush, no wasteful haunt.

Less is more, my heart will say,

Contentment blooms, each passing day.

A simple meal, with seeds and greens,

A peaceful life, of quiet scenes.

No harm I cause, to creature dear,

My vegan food, brings joy, not fear.

For days, I'll eat no food at all,

To cleanse my body, stand up tall.

No creamy milk, no sweet delight,

Just water clear, to make me right.

No milk or honey, pure and fine,

My senses calm, a peaceful sign.

A gentle fast, a break from taste,

My body pure, no time to waste.

The ache may burn, a steady flame,

I breathe it in, without the blame.

My mind a mirror, clear and bright,

Reflecting shadows, bringing light.

Old deeds like tinder, turn to dust,

Tap's sacred fire, in which I trust.
