Tagore suggested that leadership should avoid aggressive nationalism fueled by power, wealth, conformity, and fear. This approach undermines the spirit of humanism, individuality, and diversity. Crass capitalism, materialism, and militaristic nationalism are toxic, as they unleash the venom of ruthless oppression and exploitation of the majority. True nationalism, on the other hand, promotes inclusion, equity, coexistence, resilience, and respect for diversity and human dignity.

Tagore's Quotes

  • Neither the colourless vagueness of cosmopolitanism, nor the fierce self-idolatry of nation-worship, is the goal of human history.

  • Nationalism is a cruel epidemic of evil that is sweeping over the human world of the present age.

  • Their real freedom is not within the boundaries of security, but in the highroad of adventures, full of the risk of new experiences

  • Political and the commercial man 9is) the man of the limited purpose.

  • With the growth of power, the cult of the self-worship of the Nation grows in ascendancy; and the individual willingly allows the Nation to take donkey-rides upon his back; and there happens the anomaly which must have such disastrous effects, that the individual worships with all sacrifices a god which is morally much inferior to himself. This could never have been possible if the god had been as real as the individual.

An Inspired Poem

Nationalism of forceful might,

Fueled by conformity's hollow light.

Fear's dark whispers, crowd's demand,

Autocracy across the land.

Individuality, a fading gleam,

Plurality, a broken dream.

One path chosen, one voice heard,

No room for difference, not a word.

This hungry beast, with grasping hand,

Builds its empire, built on sand.

It feasts on riches, boasts of war,

And leaves the many wanting more.

Its venom spreads, a bitter tide,

Where justice falters, truths are tied.

The strong prevail, the weak are prey,

Lost to power's cruel display.

But listen close, a different sound,

Where common ground is to be found.

A nation's heart, with open door,

Welcomes all, and asks no more.

Inclusion's song, a gentle art,

Equity's embrace, a healing part.

Together strong, we learn to stand,

Resilient spirit, hand in hand.

With dignity, our worth we claim,

No need for hate, no need for shame.

For true belonging, rich and wide,

Lets human kindness be our guide.
